Assemblage 23 shows in Sweden have a special kind of energy I've never experienced anywhere else, so I am very excited to announce that we'll be returning for the first time in probably over 10+ years to perform at the Subkult festival in Vänersborg, Sweden on July 7th (the festival itself goes from July 6-8) That just happens to be the birthday of A23 keyboardist Paul Seegers as well, so it will be a doubly momentous occasion! New Charity Single from Helix

I hope everyone's new Year is off to a good start.  We're hitting 2023 running with a new standalone track from Helix called "For Bill", out exclusively on Bandcamp on February 3rd.  All proceeds from the single go to the surviving family of Mari's dear friend Bill, who took his life this past November and left behind two young daughters and his wife.

Here's what Mari had to say: "Bill was the first person in my life to truly believe in me and my skill as a musician, he was one of my first bandmates. We played together side by side on stage when only church basements would book us because we were only 15. He was an excellent bassist, electric to watch, even as a kid. However, Bill held a lot of sadness and he did this behind a big bright laugh and smiling bright blue eyes. He didn't want to talk about those types of things ever but he truly was a kid with the world on his shoulders.

We lost touch as we grew older and each went our separate ways. However, last October 2022, out of the blue Bill surprised me and came to see me perform. I cried when I saw him. Here was my past, here was 15, here was that spark that started it all. I hugged him over and over and told him how much it meant to me that he could have come to see. I told him all of the wonderful journeys music has taken me on, how grateful I was for his belief in me all those years ago. That I even met my handsome, talented, amazing husband due to the fact that I never gave up on my dreams. He smiled so big, that smile I always knew and loved and told me how proud he was of me. That meant everything to me to hear that. I walked away from that evening at a loss for words of how lucky I was to see my old friend again.

A month later, I read the crushing news that Bill had died and it felt like the wind was knocked out of me. Bill had taken his own life. You know I ran our conversations over and over in my mind. I should have known, I should have reached out more. So many questions you are left with after that. It's such a dark, confusing place to be in and will always be."

The single will come out exclusively on Bandcamp on Friday, February 3rd. The track will cost $1, but supporters are welcome to pay more, if they wish. All proceeds go to Bill’s wife and daughters. Pre-orders are open now at: https://helix.bandcamp.com

Free Patches for Arturia SQ80V from Assemblage 23
A couple of months back, I posted on Facebook that I had found a 34+ year old diskette that contained a bunch of synth sounds I made for the Ensoniq SQ-80 synth, the second synth I ever owned. Since Arturia had recently released a VST emulation of that synth that could load sys-ex data from the original, the first thing I did was import all those banks and convert them for use in Arturia SQ80V.

So, in the spirit of giving, I went through and selected the best of the sounds I had made across various banks, and I'm sharing them with you. I decided to include the 40 best sounds I made, since this was the size of a bank on the SQ-80. The sounds are as 16/17 year old me made them in 1988, warts and all. The only alterations I've made is to add basic effects like reverb, since the original synth lacked built-in effects.

Now, I was obviously just a kid when I made these sounds, so manage your expectations, but hopefully you'll find something cool and useful here to inspire your own music. Happy Holidays to you all! Onward to 2023!

GO GRAB THE BANK!

Six Flags "Goth on the Mountain" Event Cancelled
A23 is sad to announce that due to circumstances beyond our control the Goth on the Mountain event in Valencia, CA on September 16th has been cancelled. Here is a statement from the organizers:

"It is with great sadness and disappointment that our Goth on the Mountain event has been canceled. We have worked tirelessly to make this event a success, but we, unfortunately, did not receive the same effort from the park. We had an agreement with the park that was negotiated months ago but they could not comply with the terms of the agreement. We tried extremely hard to modify the agreement with the park to keep the event alive but they could not meet our terms such that it would have been too much of a detriment to Inland Empire Goth and to our members. In the last few hours, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the event so that we can mitigate our losses. We will be reviewing our options for recovering losses from the park and thank you all for your understanding.

We thank you immensely for your patience and understanding at this time. We know you have questions. Please give us time to provide you with accurate information and answers. We know you deserve it and it is our utmost desire to provide you with what you deserve. As soon as we have information we will share it. Remember, you are our main priority at this time and our goal is to honor and respect this subculture we love so very much. We will be working on planning other events for you in the future.

On behalf of the Goth on the Mountain staff, entertainment, and volunteers we are very grateful for all the support and excitement our community showed for us and this event. It empowers us to want to continue to strive to bring this community what it deserves. We are dedicated to providing high-quality events to the community we love so much, to a community that deserves a safe space and a supportive atmosphere. The Gothic subculture has endured for decades and we will continue to prevail. "
